During a recent reading of the book of James, I stumbled onto an interesting tidbit in the first verse.
“James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.” James 1:1
What an intro.
In the opinion of our power-hungry culture, James could have done a whole lot better. After all, he had friends in high places. He could have said, “James, the beloved, exalted, and best-loved brother of Christ.” Or, “James, the one hand-picked by God to receive an exclusive revelation.”
But, no, he didn’t.
Instead of exalting himself, he humbled himself. Instead of finding his self-worth in his popularity rating, he chose to identify himself with meekness.
James knew what mattered most in God’s eyes. And that’s something I need to keep in mind, too.
