Understanding the “Me” vs “I” Grammar Rule

    Chalkboard

“If the English language made any sense, lackadaisical would have something to do with a shortage of flowers.” – Doug Larson

Pronouns, adjectives, split infinitives, gerunds, and dangling participles occasionally cause me to pause and reflect on the why behind the English language.

However, one of the tricky rules of grammar is no longer an issue for me, thanks to Word Wise.

How to Know When to Use “I” instead of “Me” When Writing

Few grammatical mistakes leave a poor impression as much as mixing up “I” and “me.”
    . . .
The best, easiest, and least onerous method of knowing which word to use when is to drop out the other person altogether.

–Kate and I/me went to our cha cha lesson last night. Is it “Kate and me” went or “Kate and I” went? Drop out Kate and what have you got left? I went to our cha cha lesson last night – so it follows that if Kate joined me, “Kate and I” went (“me went” would be very David Sedarisian, but wrong nonetheless).

–Kate invited my boyfriend and I/me to brunch. Again, drop out the other person (buh-bye, boyfriend) and who did Kate invite to brunch? She invited “me,” so “Kate invited my BF and me to brunch.”

    Hi Mrs. Stewart!

Who vs. Whom is a really tough one, but Word Wise has a great solution for this too - http://wordwise.typepad.com/blog/2007/04/whowhom_h...

We're praying for God's will and lots of mercy tomorrow!

'Who and whom' give me trouble......I guess I need to look up the rule in one of the many English books around the house. LOL
I wonder who or whom will win the election tomorrow. Praying for God's mercy upon our nation.
